Choose a pathway, not a nationality shortcut
Canadian immigration eligibility depends on the program and your circumstances, not a country-specific promise of approval. Applicants from the United States may consider skilled-worker programs, provincial nominations, study, employer-supported work or family sponsorship. First establish whether your goal is a temporary stay, permanent residence or proof of existing citizenship.
Preparing your evidence
US citizenship and US residence are different facts. Certain CUSMA work-permit categories depend on US or Mexican citizenship, a listed profession and qualifying work arrangements, not merely holding US immigration status. A person living in the US with another nationality must be assessed against the exemptions actually available to that person.
Work, travel and permanent residence
US citizens generally do not need a Canadian visitor visa for ordinary visits, but entry conditions still apply and visitor status does not authorize ordinary employment. US permanent residents have their own travel-document requirements. Express Entry eligibility and ranking are separate from CUSMA eligibility, and neither a US job nor a Canadian job offer guarantees Canadian permanent residence.
Language, education and family planning
For Express Entry, check eligibility for at least one managed program before using a CRS estimate to compare past draws. Approved language tests and an education credential assessment may be needed. Include the correct accompanying family members and budget for government charges, biometrics and third-party costs. Funds must be documented where the program requires them; borrowed money or unexplained deposits may require closer review.
